Transportation Services

Transportation Services
Avnet Logistics provides a variety of transportation management options for both B2B and B2C client services. Using an array of multimodal carrier relationships, we apply the right modes and carriers to meet your service and cost requirements.

We evaluate all the carrier options, find the right price/performance combination, and execute the shipment to meet your specific objectives. By leveraging the buying power of Avnet’s own transportation activity, Avnet Logistics can obtain more capacity for its customers than they could individually. This benefit is especially important for technology companies that have critical needs during peak seasons and end-of-quarter surges.

Find information about transportation managements associations in the region.

The Photograph of cars and a bus in Lloyd DistrictTransportation management associations are nonprofit coalitions of local businesses and/or public agencies that work to strengthen partnerships with businesses to reduce traffic congestion and pollution by improving commuting options for their employees. These associations are an essential component of the Regional Travel Options program and provide the following benefits:

* promote shared ride and the use of transit, walking, biking, work schedule changes and telecommuting, especially during the most congested time of the day
* help achieve regional transportation goals by reducing drive alone trips in employment areas
* help to achieve regional growth management goals of improved economic development by helping to break congestion barriers to doing business
* help employers comply with the ECO rule mandate for reducing drive alone commute trips by 10 percent over three years

Metro allocates approximately $150,000 a year to transportation management associations. The region is committed to providing ongoing funding to support these associations as a strategy to engage the business community and to assist them with work-based transportation programs that reduce drive alone trips. There are six operating associations in the region that develop and implement area specific strategies for reducing drive alone commute trips.

Traffic Management

TrafficTraffic management is the headache for the civil transportation management authorities. People are struggling with the traffic jam everyday. Up to now, at least in Shanghai, the traffic programs in FM radio are still the preferred source for the traffic update. It has a great value to allow the drivers on the go to have the overview insight for the traffic status ahead. TMC (Traffic Message Channel) is invented for this purpose. New delivery channels are emerging that could carry TMC services, including RDS/RDBS, digital radio (DAB), mobile Internet, paging and GSM/GPRS mobile phone networks.

The Dash Express GPS is a promising alternative solution for traffic management. Let us see it in this way. The TMC is a top-down and centralized traffic management approach, and the Dash Express is a flat and distributed traffic management approach. It is for sure that the similar projects will launch if Dash Express is successful.

Both TMC and Dash Express require powerful servers to collect the data of speed and vehicle densities on the road, and send the information back to the drivers via broadcast channels or IP networks.

Menlo Worldwide Network Logistics Center (NLC) Overview

While we have reported on many Menlo global warehousing operations over the past years, warehouse management is only half of the Menlo 3PL story. With a global transportation management staff of 374 serving 45 customers, Menlo managed approximately 3.3 million international and domestic transportation shipments in 2008. It is on track to manage $1.2 billion of transportation in 2009 and is targeting to grow its transportation management business to over $2 billion by the end of 2012.

A large amount of Menlo’s transportation is managed from its 150 person Network Logistics Center (NLC) operation in Aurora, IL making the NLC a significant player in domestic transportation network management. Approximately 83% of the transactions the NLC manages are for outbound shipments and 17% are inbound. Of the NLC transactions, 72% are for domestic shipments and 28% are international. Menlo’s key transportation management accounts include more recent customers Bayer MaterialScience, Dana, and the DTCI (Defense Transportation Coordination Initiative), and long-running Menlo customers Dow, HP, Starbucks, Ricoh, Sears, Electrolux, and Stanley.

Oregon Convention Center Traffic Impact Study and Transportation Management Plan

Kittelson & Associates, Inc. (KAI) completed a multifaceted transportation management plan (TMP) for the expansion of the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. Working with the project team and agency partners, KAI developed a series of transportation demand management strategies to encourage alternative forms of transportation such as the adjacent light-rail line and bus transit.

Caltrans Transportation Management Center

The new Caltrans District 4 Transportation Management Center monitors and controls San Francisco Bay area traffic. Video cameras installed on the freeways feed live pictures back to the Center, and this constant monitoring allows Caltrans to adapt to disruptions in traffic flow. It isn't hard to see why this installation is a very high-pressure application, and indeed critical to the area.

The Challenge:
Caltrans needed a high definition large display array to feature the live camera pictures from the Caltrans web site. The ability to capture and annotate over the pictures was also a necessity. This technology was needed not only in the main control room (pictured above) but in several other monitoring rooms, plus a room for dignitaries and the press to view the procedures.

The Solution:
Eight brilliant 50" Pioneer plasma displays were installed in the location, 4 of them being pictured above in the main control room. Six of these plasmas were retrofitted with interactive touch screen overlays plus software, which allows the user to completely access and control all applications, working directly at the plasma screen.

ICMS Description

The ICMS will be a system that consists of three major subsystems:

* System Services, consisting of systemwide functions of Data Management, System Management, and Life Cycle Support;
* IMTMS, an existing data acquisition and dissemination network within the San Diego region; and
* Decision Support System (DSS), a new capability that provides the integration of event management, multi-agency collaboration tools, multi-modal response plans, and impact assessment (modeling) to the existing IMTMS network.

The IMTMS subsystem is, in turn, connected to a number of existing and planned external systems in the region (shown in Figure 2‑1) that provide static and dynamic data on the condition of the region’s transportation networks. The IMTMS system also provides a degree of shared changeable message signs (CMSs) and closed circuit television (CCTV) control, data processing, and information display capabilities that will be enhanced by the ICMS development process.

I-15 ICMS functions will be developed for extensibility and adaptability to other corridors in the San Diego region. Figure 2‑2 provides a preliminary architectural view of ICMS and its component subsystems.

Transportation Management System Overview

At the heart of BestTransport's solution is our Transportation Management System (TMS), a system that captures and analyzes vast amounts of data as it continually tracks and measures your entire transportation process. Accessed via the Internet, Best Transport's TMS is a secure online service that automates all aspects of transportation management and execution including inputting, consolidating, tendering and scheduling loads and outputting results. The system's real-time data intelligence delivers management tools that can track status, manage rates, calculate freight payments, generate opportunities, produce analysis and measurement reports and create freight documents.

Plan > Execute > Settle > Analyze
PLAN Efficiently

BestTransport's TMS enables you to maximize capacity by building and consolidating loads according to production requirements.

* Load Input — This web-based interface enables your transportation personnel to input orders manually, or for greater productivity, integration enables orders to enter the system automatically and seamlessly.
* Load Optimizer — The load optimization tool gives visibility to multiple units at one or multiple locations, allows user-defined rules for consolidation, and quickly turns expensive partial loads in to economic full truckloads.
* Rate Manager — The rate manager automates routine and labor-intensive tasks related to carrier contract management such as enabling rates, terms and conditions to be maintained online in one central location.

EXECUTE Seamlessly

BestTransport's system provides constant visibility of shipments to ensure a load is tracked through delivery. The following execution modules eliminate time-consuming manual tasks and enable you to deliver important system-generated messages automatically to key supply chain partners:

* Load Tender — Load tendering enforces a consistent discipline and eliminates the need to interactively phone, e-mail or fax individual carriers. The Load Tender function offers three major tendering methods:
o Tender roll — uses rules to offer loads to a prioritized list of carriers and gives each one an allotted time to accept before moving to the next carrier on the list
o Direct tender — enables you to offer a load directly to a single carrier
o Quick tender — enables a load to be broadcast to a group of carriers and offers the load to the first carrier that responds
* Load Scheduler — The online scheduling tool enables you to improve communication and overall transportation department productivity. Automated scheduling enables you to easily manage dock profiles.
* Load Output — Load output allows you to quickly communicate load messages and keep all key stakeholders and systems updated.
* Status Manager — The status module is a comprehensive control center that enables your transportation department to manage and track all loads extensively.
* Documentation Manager — Documentation manager accepts load output messages and turns the information into required documentation for the shipment and delivery of a load.

SETTLE Quickly

BestTransport's freight payment manager produces an accurate payment file that can automatically feed your payment processing system to reduce billing errors and save time. By integrating the TMS with your payment-processing system, you reduce manual efforts to schedule and prepare freight bill payment as well as reduce the associated freight bill audit steps.

* Freight Audit & Reconciliation Manager — Provides a complete audit trail and eliminates the need to check most invoices before processing-you only review and approve exceptions.
* Freight Payment Manager — The freight payment module produces an accurate payment file that automatically feeds your payment-processing system to reduce billing errors and save time.

ANALYZE Accurately

BestTransport's TMS provides data to measure and report against the established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). You are able to analyze massive amounts of data and continually track and evaluate your transportation activities as well as carrier performance through scorecards.

* Report Manager — Report manager provides a set of standard reports that measure the progress of freight-cost management, staff productivity and delivery responsiveness.
